I've relied on the techniques sections of Sweaters from Camp and Meg Swansen's Knitting when I needed direction, but these two books have been out of print for years. Most of what I know about knitting I learned from Meg, so when people asked me to recommend a book on Fair Isle or stranded techniques, I was at a loss. It's not that the classic books are wrong, but they don't cover all the tips and tricks, and Meg's information was spread out among many publications.
Well, the book I've been waiting for has finally arrived! Knitting with Two Colors by Meg Swansen and Amy Detjen. Meg and Amy managed to fill 65 pages with just about everything you need to know, from casting on and reading charts, to centering motifs, trapping yarn (and Armenian knitting), shaping armholes and necklines, decreasing and increasing in pattern, on and on and on! They also included the updated percentages for yoke and drop-shoulder sweaters and a handy step-by-step decision-making guide to designing your own garment. It's amazing how much information can be found in this slim volume!
I can't recommend this book highly enough, and it's now available at FeralKnitter.com. What a great way to finish off the year!
Looks like my book shelf needs another knitting volume! Thanks for the tip. And thanks too for all your knitting-tech posts, especially/most recently the guide to re-coloring Fair Isle designs: the best I've seen on the subject.
