We spent a long weekend at Lake Tahoe, a very large alpine lake in the granite mountains of the Sierra Nevada in eastern California. We rented an inexpensive condo in Squaw Valley that was central to lots of fun activities.
Most exciting: Gingko had a chance to fly a trike out of Carson City, Nevada! (What? I'd never heard of such a thing. It's a powered hang glider that looks for all the world like a Jetson's car.) Paul Hamilton of Hang Gliding Tahoe taught her the basics and then they were off! Gingko could steer, but Paul could take over at any time. She had a giant smile on her face when they returned!
There are lots of paved trails in the North Tahoe area: one day we walked a few miles along the Truckee River; the next day we rented bicycles to travel further on the trail. I was pretty rusty at being on two wheels (a couple of accidents on my motorcycle many years ago kept me off bikes all this time), but after an hour I was feeling pretty confident. We'll be doing this again!
One afternoon we spent several hours whitewater rafting with Tahoe Whitewater Tours--what fun that was! Class III rapids with a skilled guide on a sunny day--what could be better? Here's the decription:
The Boca Run is an exhilarating Class III, intermediate, whitewater tour that begins gently and then progressively becomes more challenging. Building to an exciting finish in Floriston Gorge, with rapids like “Jaws” and “Pinball”, you are sure to have a memorable/adventurous experience.
A great vacation!
You might remember that nearly two years ago I did an elimination diet called The Whole 30, which is designed to remove foods that are often problematic for human health. At the end of the 30 days, you add back different types of food one at a time to find out what might be causing problems. I learned a lot from the process, and some things have stayed with me in the 20 months since: I discovered that gluten (or wheat--it's academic, really) causes my digestive problems so I avoid it carefully; I broke the fake sugar habit; I stopped drinking diet sodas; I learned to like my coffee black.
Although I learned that my body seemed to thrive on the paleo-style diet, sadly over time I reverted to bad habits of eating, gobbling sugar and "gluten-free" treats in particular when under stress.
Spending an active vacation made me long to get back to healthier eating and moving, so I've started another Whole 30. I want to be able to enjoy hiking and biking and rafting for years to come! Wish me luck...
